Roberta Hall-McCarron is the Edinburgh-born chef behind The Little Chartroom in Leith, which she runs with her husband Shaun after years cooking under Tom Kitchin; the couple also opened Eleanore and the café and bottle shop Ardfern. Her picks come from her own words in SheerLuxe, The Good Food Guide, Suitcase and SquareMeal: Stuart Ralston’s Noto, which she calls one of her favourites, Montrose and Lyla, and Nauticus, her favourite bar in Leith for any occasion.
I don’t get out to restaurants as much as I used to since I have a two-year-old at home, but Stuart Ralston’s Noto is one of my favourites.

In Edinburgh I love Montrose and Lyla, two very different styles but both equally enjoyable.

It’s the sister restaurant to Edinburgh’s Timberyard, and the quality is amazing.

If it's cocktails you're after, then head into town to Bramble Bar or Lucky Liquor Co.

We go here quite a lot because it’s handy - if you want something a bit more casual, you know what you’re getting at Hawksmoor. It’s super consistent, which is really difficult to do on the scale that they do it on. If you just want a nice steak and some tasty sides, that’s the go to. And we can take the baby because it’s a big open room, noisy, if she’s screaming her head off no-one cares too much! The staff are incredibly well-trained as well.

order: steak
On the first night, I'd keep it casual: Gulp Ramen is always a good bet, followed by a drink in Spry.

Run by the same team as neighbourhood wine bar Spry, the charming coffee house is perched at the top of Leith Walk. You'll find everything from hot-cross buns to feta flatbreads and homemade sausage rolls. I can't recommend it enough.
