A perfect day. Ah, springtime methinks, breakfast at Leila’s Shop, followed by a mosey around Labour & Wait, then a toss up between exploring the stacks either in the British or in the London Library followed by a visit to a bookshop, perhaps Hatchards, Assouline, or Claire de Rouen or Gay’s the Word, prior to meeting for lunch which could be a bag of goodies from Honey & Co and sitting on a bench in a tucked away wee spot or park, or a Welsh rarebit in the bar at St John, or being even more convivial in the restaurant. Perhaps pondering Bouchon Racine or Brutto for dinner. Is there a lunchtime performance at the Wigmore Hall? And if so, might a wander through the Wallace Collection after be a happy thought, of course. The others being full, a happy find was a table at Noble Rot for an early dinner followed by a gentle walk through Bloomsbury and if the crowds have abated and the doors still open, ponder a visit to the British Museum. And to conclude, an always enjoyable visit to Ciao Bella on Lamb’s Conduit Street, though there is a thought for a nightcap on home turf at Quo Vadis.

Anything on the menu at St. John's. They do all the classic desserts and they do them all really well.

Madeleines at St. John. After filling your boots, there's something so satisfying about having a couple of madeleines.

Just a stool at the bar, all their white coats and stuff. It feels like I'm part of something.

The first is St John, which is nearly 30 years old and is still utterly true to its original vision.

This was one of the first restaurant experiences that made me want to learn to cook and open a restaurant. I used to eat there regularly in my formative years, and it opened my eyes to the possibilities of cooking with British ingredients.

For me, my favourite place to eat out has got to be St. JOHN and St John's Bread and Wine – truly iconic for a reason!
