Well, it has to be said, a sunny day usually involves ambling along the canal early to Towpath for breakfast and as sunshine is to be celebrated, lunch on the terrace at The River Café.

I was going to say River Cafe because it gets a lot of stick on here, but anyone who says it's overrated is jealous.

It's my ultimate comfort place and let me tell you why.
When I came to London in 2007, I didn’t know anything. I didn’t know of Gordon Ramsay – seriously! I met chef Rose Gray [the late co-founder, with Ruth Rogers, of The River Cafe] at the beginning of my London life, when I was working at Zuma. She invited me to the restaurant and I learned a lot from her about ingredients, herbs and local produce. Because I came from Tokyo, I didn’t know Cornwall, I didn’t know Scotland. I remember trying Scottish langoustines and thinking ’wow’. I still use ones from the Isle of Skye; that’s from Rose, she taught me a lot, including what’s important. I’m a lucky guy. At The River Cafe, I love the pasta, any grilled fish or pizza, and the signature dessert, the chocolate nemesis. The wine is also great. The atmosphere at The River Cafe is what I aim for at Endo – friendly, chatty, fun. I never tell the guests how serious I am.

Best pizza, the River Cafe. The only bad thing is it's so far away.

It’s a classic, but one of my favourites is The River Café. The team is a true industry leader and the hospitality is the best anywhere – it’s always warm and welcome with excellent service and a great atmosphere.

The River Cafe and Rochelle Canteen are top of the list at the moment. Lunch at Rochelle and a lunch or early evening at The River Cafe are two of my favourite things in London. Crudo, pizzetta, wood roast fish and artichokes are some of my favourite things and they’re all a fairly safe bet to be on the menu at the River Cafe.
